THE TREACHERY OF IMAGES

This is not a pipe. This is not even a picture of a pipe. It is an illusion of a picture of a pipe.

The Treachery of Images is a well-known surrealist painting by René Magritte which is  currently in Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It has the message Ceci n’est pas une pipe, which translates as This is not a pipe.

We made a cushion and put the message on the back because illusion lettering is necessarily large. You could make a wall-hanging using just the pipe or you could make a larger hanging with the lettering below the picture.
